Sir,
I learn that the members of the Hong Kong Civil Service are receiving an interim increase of ten per cent on their salaries for the year 1918 and that this increase is to be continued for six months after the end of the war. This, I understand, has been done as the cost of living in Hong Kong was considered to have been increased thirty per cent. by the war.
I have the honour to ask that you will be so good as to bring to the notice of the Hong Kong Government, the fact that the expenses of living in England have been increased by considerably more than thirty per cent. and that I find it extremely difficult there to live on my pension. In these circumstances I beg that an increase may be granted.
